Types of Massages
Swedish
One of the most well-known types of massage, Swedish massage is characterized by long, relaxing strokes; kneading strokes that manipulate body tissue; and can include rhythmic tapping strokes. Despite common misconception, Swedish massage can be applied with deep pressure if desired and appropriate.
Deep Tissue
Deep Tissue massage addresses specific muscles and their attachment points through three main techniques: applying pressure and strokes in the direction of the specific muscle fibers; creating friction or vibration with or against the specific muscle fibers, or in a circular motion; and manipulating the specific muscle through contraction, applying pressure, and lengthening. Contrary to common belief, Deep Tissue massage is not synonymous with deep pressure, and does not have to hurt in order to be effective.
Myofascial
This type of massage intends to engage and create space within the fascia, the strong connective tissue between skin and muscle tissue that is found throughout the entire body. Myofascial involves gently moving the fascia in opposing directions and can include passive or active movements of limbs and joints.
Prenatal
Prenatal massage is designed for expectant mothers at any point in their pregnancy. The mother is safely and comfortably positioned on the massage table through the use of pillows and bolstering. Additionally, pressure and techniques are modified for optimal safety, while still providing appropriate tension release and relaxation. In some cases, a doctor’s note may be requested.
Oncology
Oncology massage is intended for clients who have or have had cancer. Traditional massage techniques are used, but in a gentle, nurturing way. If you or someone you know could benefit from an oncology massage, we’d be happy to discuss what a session may look like for you.
Injury
Using a combination of Swedish, Deep Tissue, Myofascial, and Range of Motion (ROM), Injury massage addresses acute and chronic issues with the intent of guiding the affected tissues back to a healthy, pain-free state.
Hot Stone*
True to its name, Hot Stone massage uses natural or artificially made stones that have been heated to a safe temperature to create an experience of warmth and luxurious relaxation.
Please note: The definitions and use of these types of massages often differ between massage therapists. Kristen believes that no type of massage needs to hurt or leave you feeling sore for days afterwards.
*Hot Stone massage is not yet being offered.
